XR Newsletter Archive #11: Get ready for a green 2019!

Happy 2019, and welcome to the 11th Extinction Rebellion Newsletter!

We’re hitting the new year running, with an incredible number of events happening all over the country. The main theme for January will be the laying of foundations and preparing for the coming Eco Spring, as reflected in the many planning meetings happening regionally and nationally (see Upcoming Activity for more), together with a bumper crop of socials, training events and talks.

That said, things won’t be too quiet on the actions front either: we’ve already seen several solidarity actions over the festive period (see Recent Activity), and are expecting many more between now and mid-February when we’ll be returning to the streets in (non-violent!) force. We’re also looking forward to rebellions in several major US cities at the end of this month – stay tuned!

If you’d like to get involved in making it all happen, please see our newly refurbished volunteers page for available roles.

Check out what’s on near you with our full list of upcoming events, available to view on our website, rebellion.earth/events. If you’re new, or haven’t already seen it, remember to check out our Campaign Overview Document.

If you’d like to look back through the newsletter archive, you can find it here.

Let’s make 2019 go down in history as the year we, the people, changed the game on climate change!

Action at Global Coal Resources Annual General Meeting

(Note: Group of men huddled together to the right of the picture are shareholders locked out of the meeting)

On the 28th of December, Extinction Rebellion joined Reclaim The Power to support the Phulbari Solidarity Group and disrupt the Annual General Meeting of Global Coal Mining Resources. The company has been trying since 2005 to begin work on an open pit coal mine in the Phulbari region of North West Bangladesh. By the company’s own admission, the project would immediately displace 40,000 people. Detailed reports of the project have shown that as many as, “220,000 people could be displaced over time as mining operations drain the water from wells and irrigation canals in the area.”FOOTNOTE: Footnote The project could pose a huge threat to some of the world’s largest Mangrove forests, the Sundarbans, listed as a Unesco world heritage site.

If the mine is built, it would lead to the forced displacement of up to 230,000 people over the 36 year life cycle of the project. It will increase poverty, water pollution and will plunder 14,600 hectares of Bangladesh’s most fertile and productive agricultural land in the region, causing a crisis of food production. It will have a devastating impact on the people and the environment. In return Bangladesh’s government would gain nothing but economic exploitation”, stated Dr Rumana Hashem of Phulbari Solidarity Group.

The three Extinction Rebels who blocked the entrance to the building inside the lobby successfully stopped major shareholders, including GCM’s Head of Corporate Affairs Brian Mooney, from attending the AGM. After standing outside for over three hours with the rest of the Phulbari supporters chanting and singing, the shareholders gave up and decided to leave.

The three arrestees were later removed by police, arrested for aggravated trespass, and charged with £4000 worth of damages. The Rebels were proud to have joined and supported the Phulbari people and will fight the charges with the support of all groups involved.

For more info on the day please read the Phulbari Blog summary, or a personal account from XR’s Tim Jones.

Rebel starts the Year as we mean to go on

On January the 2nd a Rebel in Exeter started the year with a bang, spray painting a Barclays Bank with black powder paint, reading, “Frack Off! #XR”. He was arrested for criminal damage, with a court date to follow in January.

Barclays Bank is notorious for its continued investments in a number of fossil fuels. In the UK, a subsidiary of Barclays Bank is the majority shareholder of Third Energy, a company pursuing multiple fracking operations in Lancashire. Every action we take helps this movement grow stronger, and draws further attention to the climate emergency. We are grateful to Matt, the Exeter Rebel, who was arrested for taking a stand against this twisted system that seeks financial reward in the destruction of our planet.

With Love and Rage, the fight goes on.

Man arrested in Exeter after anti-fracking slogan scrawled on Barclays Bank

First Court dates for November arrestees

Last week, Extinction Rebels attended their first court dates in London and Manchester for actions they took as part of the November 2018 Rebellion. These preliminary hearings were the start of a process that will see the UK legal system seek to punish those brave people for actions they took to draw attention to the climate emergency, and force our government out of its inertia in the face of the sixth mass extinction that is underway. All of us here at XR cannot express enough our gratitude to these people who are dedicated to preserving this planet as it is. Thank you to all of those who have stood up and continue to stand up for climate justice!

The vast majority of those arrested in November, including all those arrested on the bridges, are yet to hear anything about their arrests. We will keep you updated with any news on those who have been charged, and those still waiting to be.

Preparing for 2019 – XR UK Strategy Meet Up

19th – 20th January

Register here

In 2018 Extinction Rebellion went from a handful of people planning in a room to some of the biggest acts civil disobedience in decades. It’s clear why – the climate and ecological crisis is beyond dire – and rebellion is now both necessary and justified.

Thousands of people are now involved and we’re inviting all of you to come to the first UK meet up in London on the weekend of the 19-20th January. The weekend will consist of three things:

1. Take the time to meet each other, and share our stories, hopes and fears. Understand what has brought us all to this point of action. Learn what we are all contributing around the country – this movement requires a lot of work, but we will get there by doing it together.

2. Inputting into the Strategy Process for how we are going to win in April this year. Core teams of XR have been working overtime to develop new ways of working, and coordinating our plans to bring together a dramatic series of mass civil disobedience events during the International Rebellion, starting from 15th April. You can ask any questions and feed ideas into the strategy process via small group discussions.

3. On Sunday we will hit the ground running with training on how to build our movement and learn the many skills which will make us both effective and humane in our plan for system change.

More details will be posted on the event page in the coming days.

Places may be limited so please book soon and bring new people from your local group or affinity group. Everyone is very welcome, whatever your background and relationship with Extinction Rebellion. If you need accommodation in London let us know at info@risingup.org.uk or xrtravel2018@gmail.com. We hope to have places to sleep – but if you can stay with friends then please do so!

In 2019 we have to go from national movement to world transformation – our children’s future depends on it. This is our intention, and are planning for it. We look forward to seeing you on the 19th.

Conscientious Protectors: skilling up for the courtroom, Sat 19th Jan

Legal training session 2:30-5pm, Central London

Polly Higgins & Jojo Mehta of Mission LifeForce will be running this session for XR and other environmental activists wishing to represent themselves in a criminal court using the Freedom of Conscience argument (as a means to ensure the court hears why direct action has been taken). Entry is free; more info HERE. Venue to be confirmed once we have an idea of numbers, so please indicate your interest on the Facebook event page.

First UK-Wide Youth Strike 4 Climate #FFF (Fridays For Future) – Friday 15th February

Supported by XR

The World’s Youth are waking up. Millions of young people are realising it’s now or never and are taking direct action in the face of the climate crisis and ecological catastrophe. Greta Thunberg’s pioneering school strikes in the lead-up to the Swedish elections last year, and every Friday since, have gained worldwide attention. Thousands of students have been doing the same in Australia.

Whether you are at school, college or university, go on strike on Friday 15th February. For some this falls on half term; join the protest anyway, with youth from across the world.

Come down to Parliament Square in London or, if you don’t live in London and would like to organise a similar event in your own city or town, please contact us at: youthstrike4climate@gmail.com

– Register your event here: https://www.fridaysforfuture.org/register

Tell the Government you’re prepared to break the rules to make change happen.

If you can help promote this event and the 15th February strike email us. Time is short – take the initiative

For updates, see the event here

International Rebellion Week – April 2019

In November we planted the seeds of our Rebellion; over winter we’ve been spreading roots internationally and across the UK. As spring comes, these seeds will grow into a forest. On April 15th we are calling for a global week of Rebellion, with independent local XR groups taking to streets all over the country to demand decisive action on climate change and ecological collapse.

In the meantime, we’ll be building up with weeks of action in mid-February and mid-March, and a Spring Gathering among many other events around the country. For now, we’re asking people to prepare by booking time off work for the week (or more!) following April the 15th.

More details to come in due course. Please share this with everyone you know. We’ll see you on the streets then, rebels.

We will not disappear.

We will not die off.

We will not give in.

Stay tuned for more information

See Event Page here

Volunteering, Land Support, Festivals and Space

As our movement grows, so too does the number of ways in which people can get involved and help us to achieve our vision of a sustainable future. For this reason, we’re excited to share this new section of the newsletter, where you’ll find requests and opportunities from people across XR.

The most important thing to look at, if you haven’t already, is the volunteering page on our website. Here you’ll find a whole range of positions and roles with descriptions and the means of applying. It’s worth mentioning that the applications deadline for some of these is Friday 11th of January – so if you think you might be interested, go ahead and apply!

Beyond this page, you’ll also find various requests and announcements below.

The Newsletter needs you!

Following the departure of a deeply valued member, and anticipating a much bigger and busier new year, the Newsletter team is currently looking for new members. We’re especially looking for people with experience in writing, editing/proofing, content-sourcing, and html-based design; though enthusiasm for any of these definitely counts!

Time commitment can be as little as a few hours a week, and working remotely is very feasible.

Please email xr-newsletter@protonmail.com if you’re interested.

Regen announcement: Land Support Base and Open Homes

Hello all you lovely XR folk. We have just launched a subgroup of the core XR Regenerative Culture group for the UK under the title ‘Land Support Base and Open Homes’. In Regen we are grateful for all the positive and constructive feedback from the well-being support we have provided on actions. However, we are not resting on our organic laurels!

It’s now time to start looking at a deeper embedded support for our activists and organisers in UK society, especially land-based society, as biodiversity, and connection to the land, are essential for human physical and mental health.

We have lots of plans and intentions long-term, which everyone in XR is welcome to contribute to. For now, the practical focus is on building a spreadsheet of both land-based projects and ‘open homes’ (private homes) across the UK who are happy to provide respite, on a non-commercial basis, to those in XR who need it, be they organisers or front-line activists. Some basic respite training for hosts is in development and will be made available online.

Arrangements with land-based projects may involve some XR members doing a little therapeutic physical work in return for board and food. (A bit like wwoofing, but with more emphasis on recuperation for the activists / less working hours). We are also seeking any land-based projects that can host events or trainings on a non-commercial or bartering / work exchange basis.

Decentralisation of this strategy out to regional and local groups will happen ASAP.

How you can help:

* Maybe you are already sorting out something like this for your local group or area? If you want to get in touch to coordinate with this wider strategy, please do.

* The priority right now is to find people across the UK who are happy to be entered into our spreadsheet of land-based projects and open homes, so that in the lead-up to international rebellion April 15th, we already have a grounded UK network of hosts ready to accept people for rest and psychological prep before April actions. We are especially keen to facilitate city dwellers getting a break in the countryside.

* We are also seeking committed XR folk to join this working subgroup in the capacity of contacting land-based projects and asking if they might be able to help. Significant time on data entry will then be required. If you can spare a few hours per week on an ongoing committed basis, let us know.

If you have any questions, would like to learn more, or contribute to this new Regenerative Culture subgroup, please write to us at xr-landandrespite@protonmail.com

We look forward to hearing from you!

XR Festivals

Extinction Rebellion Festivals is operational! XR will be a big presence across the UK’s Festivals in 2019, and the Working Group are currently building strands that will match the variety of scales, genres and “feels” of different festivals. The creativity, passion, expression and connection to the land that festivals provide are brilliant spaces for us to train, grow, inform, support and dance together! If you are involved as a key organiser of a festival, or have a contact who is, we’d really like to hear from you. Please, can you email XR Festivals at xrfestivals@gmail.com. We also know there are lots of XR people who have experience & skills from working at festivals who we can work with to massive effect, and we’ll asking about those very soon. Right now though, so that we can manage the right part at the right time, please just contact us with festival organisers and/or those who have contacts for them please 😉

We’re looking for an XR community space!

It would be used in a variety of ways; for office and storage space, meeting and training rooms, socials/regen events and growing food (if there’s an outdoor area). Ideally, it will be in zone 1 or 2 and it should be easily accessible on public transport from central London.

If you know of an empty building or one which is available to rent please send the details (address, owner, photos etc.) to xr-spaces@protonmail.com or perhaps you could organise an empty building search with some other XR members and let us know what you find!

Please drop us an email if you want to get more involved in the project.

This civilisation is finished, so what is to be done? (and as video)

A lecture/paper presented by Rupert Read, asking what might come after the collapse of our present civilization

Douglas: The first section is a brilliantly clear and incredibly worrying summary of the current climate crisis – the best such analysis I’ve read to date. This is followed by a consideration of what might happen in the very real possibility (now probability, in Read’s view) that we fail to face up to the challenge. Such speculation is certainly bleak, but instead of despair I found that Read’s framing provides all the more reason to fight even harder to save as much as we can of the world we love.

Can you give financial support to the Extinction Rebellion/RisingUp?

RisingUp! and the Extinction Rebellion will have many costs over the coming months including arrestee support, transport and accommodation for protests, art materials, banners, fliers, personal expenses etc. The Rebellion needs a lot of funding to start in several places across the UK at the same time and to continue into 2019. Indeed, the scale of the Rebellion could be limited by the amount of money available.

If you would like to support the Rebellion financially, a regular standing order would be perfect (as would one off donations). Standing orders or money transfers should be made to our Triodos Bank Account (Sort code: 16-58-10 Account No: 20737912) in the name of Compassionate Revolution Ltd (the holding company for Rising Up!).

Regional Rebellion Day

Saturday 15th December – as Storm Deirdre battered the country, Extinction Rebels staged peaceful actions across the regions to raise the alarm on the ecological crisis, while pressuring local councils to; declare a Climate Emergency, go carbon neutral by 2025 and create Citizens’ Assemblies to facilitate this change. A map of all the towns and cities who have already declared climate emergency is being compiled, here.

UK Extinction Rebels Take Nationwide Action on Climate Emergency

Actions took place in towns and cities across England including; Brighton, Newbury, Exeter, Bedford, Halifax, Totnes, Torpoint and Devonport, Swindon, Bath, Cambridge, Frome, Norwich, Truro and Preston New Road, where there was a solidarity visit to the anti-fracking protest camp, the day after an action in St Peter’s Square, Manchester.

Some of the highlights included:

More than 250 rebels in Bristol sang subversive carols and gave speeches before marching on the city council. Some stopped on the way to chalk-spray the DEFRA building, and a tree was planted on the lawn outside the mayor’s office. Describing this tree as “the gift of life”, rebels urged the Mayor to implement strong measures after the City Council declared a climate emergency last month.

Tom Daldon, 19 from Bristol said: “This is the greatest challenge of my generation. We will continue to act together, we will not behave until we are listened to.”

Eight people were willingly arrested, allegedly for chalk spraying, including Bristol University’s Professor Colin Davis who said, “it felt good to be doing something”.

With a few hundred people in attendance, starting at the Grafton Centre, Angela from Extinction Rebellion Cambridge stated: “We’re holding a die-in at two shopping centres, alongside three coffins, representing the current victims of climate change, the non-human victims of the ongoing mega-extinction, and the future victims still to come”.

“We’re soon to march on the city council, where we will demand that they take serious measures against the climate crisis.”

Alison Green, Pro Vice-Chancellor of Arden University said: “Cambridge rages against the dying of the light. A few hundred people have turned out here in Cambridge to support the event. Lots of upbeat and powerful speeches. I’ve just done mine and people are gathering around listening with interest – in spite of the cold!

Totnes and Newton Abbot

120 rebels spread across Totnes and Newton Abbot. Dr Larch Maxey, 46, explained, “we’ve just had some beautiful singing from our choir, who’ve been singing alternative carols written by local XR members. There are 40 of us here in Totnes, and we’ve sent many more of our members to support Newton Abbot in its first XR event, where 80 people have gathered to sing and protest.

In Brighton, where the Council also declared a climate emergency this week, Claudia from Extinction Rebellion said: “We have 12 years to make a difference – the government must declare a climate emergency now. We have 10 people singing at the Royal Pavilion ice rink and another 30 people making Extinction Rebellion snapped logo wreaths.”

“Demonstrators are going to adapt “Give peace a chance” to “Give [life] a chance”. They are also going to make a lot of noise by banging and bashing instruments for 12 minutes to represent the 12 years we have left before we go above 1.5 degree warming.”

100 people gathered in Glasgow. Anna, 24, said “We’re meeting to rally and sing subversive carols at the Buchanan Street steps, and we’ll be giving away trees to members of the public, after which we’re planning some thought-provoking disruption based around today’s Christmas shopping”.

Actions were also scheduled for Inverness and Dundee, while XR activists in Fort William held their first meetings.

Actions took place in Carmarthen and Cardiff, while the Llandudno event was postponed due to storm Deirdre.

The same day, over 100 people showed up for Extinction Rebellion Nederlands’ Kick-Off Workshop in Hague.

Actions Debrief – December 15th

As the regions rebelled, around fifty rebels gathered in London to hold a debrief on the broader themes and developments within XR since Rebellion Day.

With the help of five excellent facilitators trained in Processwork, the room periodically split up into smaller discussion groups before reconvening for general discussion. There were also physical exercises – in which participants came together to create human sculptures – and breaks for silent reflection.

Though much was covered, the major themes of discussion were: ongoing efforts towards decentralisation, and how this might best be effected; similar questions about transparency (with frustrations voiced about insufficient progress in this area, and sympathetic responses citing the lack of time and resources to adapt as quickly as asked for); integration: how best to welcome new rebels into participation with XR; and the identification of a tension between a will to act quickly and preserve radical momentum, set against the desire to slow down and practice the mindful regeneration which we hope the movement is prefiguring for society.

None of these discussions had simple or immediate answers; but perhaps the basis of a solution can be found in the very process which raised the questions, and the sincere engagement and discussion which characterised the day’s event. The mood was supportive but serious, with people voicing genuine concerns as well as heartwarming personal experiences, and a consistent emphasis placed on listening and democracy. The day ended with food, music, dancing, and a celebration of how far XR has already come; we’re looking forward to similar events in the new year!

For more information on the development of XR moving forwards, please see our Extinction Regeneration Document.

XR at COP 24

Extinction Rebels visited Katowice in Poland for the 24th annual UN conference on climate change, COP24. We did not go to engage with the political process, which we already know to be flawed but instead to build international links of solidarity, to put forward the case for non-violent civil disobedience, and to move the conference towards an emergency framing of the climate crisis. Whilst there, we gave talks, went on marches, held meetings, organised protests, and hosted press conferences. We also disrupted a speech by Claire Perry and held our own government to account over their destructive policies. We saw President Nasheed of the Maldives wearing our symbol on the conference floor and calling for “everybody to rise up”. Indeed, over the course of the fortnight, more and more insiders grew more and more impatient and, behind the scenes, rebels from all walks of life joined the movement. We returned from COP24 strengthened in our resolve to take XR global.

The decision making of the political elite was predictably weak and reductive. In the face of their shortcomings, we find strength in our diverse, growing, and urgent movement.

Farhana Yamin – Veteran climate negotiator and adviser to small island states, said; “We pay tribute to activists, students, civil society and the leaders of vulnerable countries who are rising up all over the world demanding more. We need now to work together to build an emergency coalition focused squarely on tackling climate devastation.”

Check out; the hashtag, #DispatchFromCOP24 for more reports from Katowice. This interview with Democracy now, this street rally with XR presence and Greta Thunberg’s devastating speech to the UN plenary.

XR at the London Assembly – December 6th

On December 6th, the Greater London Assembly deliberated a motion by Caroline Russell (Green Party) that urged the Mayor “to declare a Climate Emergency, supported by specific emergency plans with the actions needed to make London carbon neutral by 2030”. The motion followed successful precedents set by councils in Bristol, Stroud, Totnes, Frome, Trafford and soon to be followed by Monmouth and Brighton (keep up to date here).

Extinction Rebels were on site bright and early to welcome assembly members as they arrived for the plenary. Our presence outside City Hall was highlighted by Caroline Russell. In her summing up, she told the Assembly that “protesters are demonstrating … they’re just exasperated that we’re not taking these risks seriously”. The motion passed with minor amendments and early in December, Mayor Sadiq Khan declared a climate emergency, announced measures to protect people from the effects of climate change, and accused central government of “dragging its feet” on these issues.

Upcoming Activity

21st December – RECLAIM THE BBC

The BBC belongs to the people and retains its duty to present to the people the unbiased facts about the things that affect our lives. They have been remiss in this duty. The Climate Crisis is catastrophically affecting people all over the world. It is the issue of our time and the BBC’s reporting should reflect that.

On the 21st December, XR will be demanding a new age of information: the BBC must lead in mobilising the nation against the greatest threat of our times. It must be a source of integrity in the face of climate emergency, as it was during WW2, when our lives were at stake, as they are now. Then, the BBC sounded a rallying cry for unity in the face of annihilation and it must do so again. We have time to affect the climate situation, but it won’t work without the media. The BBC belongs to the people, so let us remind its staff of that fact.

The XR London will take action at BBC HQ, Portland Place, London, while rebels will also be gathering at regional BBC outlets in Manchester, Bristol, Sheffield, Cambridge, Birmingham, Glasgow, Truro, and hopefully even more than this. There will also be in action outside the BBC in Berlin!

Organise in your local and regional groups, go to your local BBC offices with clear messaging about your demands. This will be our first action at the BBC. We’re disrupting production for a day, to highlight these vital issues, not to cause distress or offend BBC staff. So, we suggest sitting, lying down, singing, organising speakers and talking with BBC staff and the public about our message, all non-violently of course. The mission of the day is to educate and highlight with beauty, clarity and love, not to alienate or offend.

In the meantime, feel free to flood the BBC’s feedback inbox, if you’re of a mind to: https://ssl.bbc.co.uk/faqs/forms

For useful information, see our press release.

USA Plans National Day of Action

26th January, 2019

The UK’s Regional Day of Rebellion came as Extinction Rebellion New York held its first meeting in preparation for a National Day of Action in the USA, on 26th January, 2019. This will feature as a key part of the build up towards International Extinction Rebellion Week, which will start on the 15th April 2019, worldwide.

15th April, International Rebellion Week

In November, we planted the seeds of the rebellion in London. From those seeds we need a forest. The task ahead is monumental, and we must build strength to rise to the challenge. Through the winter, our roots have grown and spread throughout the UK and overseas.

We will not disappear. We will not die off. We will not give in.

Come the spring, regenerated, prepared, and ready, the rebellion’s first leaves will break through the soil and into the light. On April 15th we are calling for a global week of rebellion, with independent XR groups taking to the streets all over the world to demand decisive action on climate change and ecological collapse.

More details to come in due time. For more information about our regeneration period and upcoming plans, please see the regeneration update on our website.

Join the national media network – a message from the media team

Hi Rebels,

We are in the process of setting up a network to connect Media & Messaging working groups across XR. There will be regular calls and a sharing group, where people can discuss media, messaging ideas and content.

If you would like to be involved, please liaise with your local group and put forward a Media & Messaging rep. Send their name and email to pressxr@risingup.com. We’ll be in touch with more details.

Alternatively, if you’re a PayPal user (or more comfortable with PayPal), PayPal payments can be made to info@risingup.org.uk

As we come to the end of the year, we’d like to give a massive thanks to everyone reading this for all your support; it’s been an amazing, exhilarating few months so far and we’re only just getting started. We wish you a regenerative Christmas period, and we look forward to making 2019 go down in history as the Year of Rebellion!

Love and Rage,

The XR Newsletter Hivemind

This newsletter was written by a hivemind of 7 rebels.

We leave you with with a festive poem contributed by Jonathan Fishwick:

Christmas is coming

The Planet’s feeling ill

So many species dying

a killing field they fill

For people who are sleeping

your World is facing hell

The devil’s planned a party

he’s invited you as well !

Christmas is coming

Extinction’s on the way

But hope can always find a voice

and have the final say

The wind of change is blowing

Rebellion’s in the air

The XR drum is beating loud

a call to those who care

Christmas is coming

We’re called to do what’s right

to open up our grieving hearts

then stand and make a fight

The masses they are rising

non-violence is their cry

to smash the walls of greed and hate

with love their alibi

Christmas is nothing

It’s meaningless and cold

to a planet that is dying

a billion years evolved

So let us take this moment

to honour in our hearts

what moves us to rebellion

till death us all do part

For two weeks, thousands of rebels have joined actions which shut down London and cities around the UK with acts of non-violent civil disobedience. This massive display of people power has only been possible because of rebels like you, taking action together to do what must be done to avert the worst of the unfolding catastrophe. It has been heartwarming to see so many people rising up peacefully together, thank you all from the bottom of our hearts.

On Saturday 17th November, 6,000 rebels occupied London’s five most central bridges to draw immediate attention to the dire climate crisis. Rebellion Day was the culmination of a week in which Extinction Rebels blocked the entrances to BEIS, unveiled a climate change banner over Westminster Bridgeand redecorated Downing Street and DEFRA.

Rebellion Day received international media coverage. There were 85 arrests, the majority on Southwark and Lambeth bridges. Despite what was at times an assertive police presence, the people were not deterred. Thanks to the rebellion’s courage all five bridges were taken and held as planned, remaining in place for over five hours.
Rebels on Westminster Bridge

On Blackfriars Bridge, there was an array of speakers and performances from Pete the Temp to George Monbiot, as well as global witnesses coming from as far as Papua New Guinea, Ghana and Mongolia to testify to the impacts of environmental collapse on their nations. On Westminster bridge, demonstrators listened to Rupert Read, Jenny Jones, and the representative for Island States in the UN, Farhana Yamin, among many others.

As the day progressed, the bridges joined together to slow march along the river to Westminster; banners flying, chanting and singing, incorporating pedestrian passersby on the way. The day culminated with one of the central organisers, Dr. Gail Bradbrook speaking about the movement’s future plans, before a final multi-faith ceremony at Parliament Square and the planting of trees on the green.

It was an empowering moment for the rebellion, which had been gathering pace for weeks by this point. Here at last it was manifest and could not be ignored. 85 people had been willingly arrested in one day; as the sun set, a call went out across Parliament Square for volunteers to offer arrestee support. A small but improbably energetic crowd set off with a sound system to wait and dance inside and outside Charing Cross police station, greeting those eventually released with joy and solidarity. (XR filled 11 police stations across London that night) More volunteers helped clean up the equipment in Parliament Square, leaving nothing behind except three new trees and an international-scale frenzy of online attention.

From Wednesday 21st to Thursday 23rd November, for three continuous days leading up to Rebellion Day 2, teams of rebels swarmed all over London. Converging on five locations at 6:30am to move onto roads by 7:00, the tactic was to block roads for seven minutes at a time, allow the first few ranks of traffic to move past, and then spread the banners anew. This alternation – combined with successful negotiation and de-escalation with police and drivers – allowed our swarmers to sustain their presence for hours on end, leading to maps like this, a lot of press coverage, and a warning from the Met to motorists “not to travel by car or motorbike”.

On the Thursday, one of the swarms relocated to the London Assembly to join a public meeting on disaster preparation; most were denied entry, but we got in anyway to offer some constructive criticism.

And for the finale on Black Friday (AKA Buy Nothing Day), rebel swarms came together for a big finish to shut down Oxford Circus. Press release + maps here. Video report here. Live streams here.

Saturday 24th November – Following a frantic fortnight, Rebellion Day 2 began as a much more sombre affair: grieving for the life we are losing and for that which is already lost. All four corners of Parliament Square were shut down by teams of rebels to allow the funeral for our future to take place in peace, without the noise of traffic intruding on proceedings. Despite the mourning, there was much singing, joy and merriment as rebel tricksters worked their magic, attempting to dig not one but two graves in the earth. In response to this, the police turned earth protectors, kettling both graves!
A 9-piece New Orleans style funeral band then led a funeral march to Downing street, where the procession stopped for a sit-in and some further civil disobedience. More rebels were arrested as the march continued on to Buckingham Palace, where a letter from the rebellion was read out to the Queen. Amidst the singing, chanting and dancing, one rebel super-glued herself to the palace gates.
Speeches were given outside Buckingham Palace
As the sun set, the rebellion marched back to Parliament Square for a final open mic session. 15 people had been arrested, along with another 8 at a simultaneous event in Manchester. You can watch live streams of all the action from Rebellion Day 2 in London, herehere and in Manchester, here.

COP 24

Saturday December 1st – As the UN prepared for their COP24 climate talks in Katowice, Poland, an XR Bloc joined the “Together For Climate Justice” march in London to show solidarity with environmental activists mobilising around the world. Speeches were given at the Polish Embassy, including some Polish chants. The march then proceeded to Downing Street, where more speeches were given and the Frack Free United Declaration against fracking was delivered. 65, 000 people joined the “Claim the Climate” march in Brussels the next day, Sunday.

Sir David Attenborough represented the ‘People’s Seat’ at the COP24 climate summit. His full address can be found here (30 mins in). He spoke about extinction and the collapse of our civilization with a true sense of urgency. “Time is running out”, he said, and implored the decision-makers and leaders of the world to “please lead”.

  • Simultaneously, the School Strike for Climate has continued to spread around the world. Thousands of students in Australia defied their PM, Scott Morrison who said that “We don’t support the idea of kids not going to school, to participate in things that can be dealt with outside of school”.

Yellow Vest movement:

People around the world are rising up: from the courageous school strikers to the ‘yellow vest’ protesters in France, where their police force, the gendarmerie are reportedly now standing down in the face of a surge of protests against rising taxes, poverty and low incomes. There comes a time when people say “ENOUGH!” This was one of the things that finally ended WW1, when those in authority began to suffer and disobeyed orders, broke ranks and took matters into their own hands.

The “yellow vest” movement shows the strange fractures that can open up under the contradictions of modern centrism: above all, the false dichotomy between addressing global warming and addressing the ravages of capitalism. This dichotomy is especially dangerous in that it gives nationalists a narrative with which to capitalize on economic crisis while discrediting environmentalism by associating it with state oppression.

The fuel tax rise was the straw which broke the camel’s back, not the underlying cause of the demonstrations which have tragically seen at least one protester killed and hundreds injured.

Extreme Weather

Our thoughts are with those grieving loved ones and those displaced by these disasters. It is time to take responsibility for what life there is left. To grieve and to understand that all these climate catastrophes erupting, flooding and burning their way across our fragile planet are happening because of our disconnection with nature. We will continue to raise our hearts and minds to a global scale, for only by doing so can we confront the reality of human extinction.

Rebellion Swarming

Extinction Rebellion will only achieve its demands if we cause economic disruption sufficient to bring the authorities to the negotiating table.

Protest marches and rallies will not create the rapid political change now needed to deal with the ecological emergency, so we have developed another tactic that will be much harder to ignore.

NVDA Training Days in London – Preparing for the Rebellion
Over the weekend, XR hosted two interactive training days which brought together people from all over the world, wanting to get involved in NVDA action. A representative from Green & Black Cross informed us about our legal rights and what happens during an arrest. (More information here).Emphasis was put on interpersonal care and the presence of the wellbeing crew at Rebellion Day on the 17th, who operate from the London Action Resource Centre hub (White Chapel or Aldgate East stops on District/Hammersmith & City lines). If you need help or support during the action, there will be wellbeing coordinators around. It’s important to listen to yourself and if you become uncomfortable, to take personal responsibility for removing yourself from the situation.By rising up with Extinction Rebellion, we are supporting each other’s efforts through understanding, shared mutual goals, respect for one another and the world around us.MORE NVDA TRAININGS AND LUNCHTIME SWARMING BRIEFINGS WILL BE HAPPENING EVERY DAY IN LONDON FROM SUNDAY TO WEDNESDAY- MORE DETAILS AT REBELLION.EARTH/EVENTS

22 More Rebel Arrests as Extinction Rebellion Occupies BEIS Offices

unnamed (2).jpg
Photo via: Christian Climate Action.
On Monday, (12/11/18), rebel activists super-glued themselves to the doors, blocked the road and the extinction symbol was emblazoned inside and outside a government department that refuses to be transparent and which continues to blatantly lie about out proximity to catastrophe. You can watch live-streamed videos of the action, herehere and here. The press release is here.

As planned, there were a number of arrests with 22 people taken into custody.

Simon Bramwell was one of those arrested and his words were clear:

We are in the 6th mass extinction. Our wildlife is dying, our children are under threat. We must act now. Governments around the world must tell the truth and start preparing. We can act. We can change the course of destruction that we are on but it will take everyone to rebel and rise up.”

Since then we’ve had a further 33 arrests. Those who are bravely risking their liberty deserve all the support, love and solidarity that we can muster. Thank you all for your selfless actions; they will not be in vain.

Other noteworthy recent actions around the country included more roadblocks in BristolManchester and Leeds.

Bristol Rebels In Court
On Tuesday, 13/11/18, three rebel defendants pleaded ‘Not Guilty’ to charges of criminal damage at Bristol Magistrates Court, based on the lawful excuse of protecting greater property damage across the world. Their hearing will be at 10am on January 21st, at Bath Magistrates Court.

Protests and Arrests at Westminster Bridge, Downing Street and DEFRA

CLIMATE CHANGE – WE’RE F***ED – 100ft Bannerdrop
On Wednesday morning, rebels gathered on Westminster bridge to drop a colourfully worded 100+ foot banner before reconverging on Downing Street: some glued themselves to railings, some sprayed chalk-paint, and a crowd blocked off the entrance, holding up a line of empty boxes which spelled ‘food shortages are coming’. After three arrests and a stern police intervention, the protesters apparently dispersed – only to reappear outside the Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs (DEFRA). There were more chalk-sprayers and more arrests, all of which was cheered on by a peaceful, singing, leaflet-bearing crowd. You can watch livestreams of the action here and here.

Queer Party and Roadblock to Save the Amazon, outside the Brazilian Embassy last night.
Thursday night (15/11/18) saw Extinction Rebellion and friends shut down the road outside the Brazilian embassy for a Big Queer Party to Save the Amazon, protesting the election of the ecocidal Bolsonaro. Paint bombs were hurled at the embassy and 2 more rebels were arrested amidst a lively samba band. You can watch livestreams of the action here and here.

Roger Hallam’s Trial Postponed

At 10:00 this morning (Friday) at Southwark Crown Court, Roger Hallam faced a possible prison sentence for spray-chalking the central hall of King’s College London last year. Roger was charged with ‘criminal damage without lawful excuse’, and since then has been arrested 10 times for civil disobedience actions – however today his trial was postponed until March, on the grounds that the Prosecution was unable to provide enough witnesses.

The full press release is here.

Saturday 17th November, Rebellion Day will be the climax of six consecutive days of disruptive, non-violent civil disobedience, which began on Monday with our action at the Government’s Department for Business, Energy and Industrial Strategy. We will assemble in cities across the UK including in the belly of the beast, London where we will occupy the city’s five major bridges, creating economic pressure where it will be felt the most. This corporate-sponsored government, whose pandering to fossil fuel billionaires and whose negligence in refusing to honestly acknowledge the ecological crisis has given us no other choice than to conscientiously rebel.
Simultaneously,  the national Unity Demo Against Fascism and Racism will be rallying in the capital, outside the BBC. We have been coordinating to make the day as impactful as possible. Our struggles are interconnected. We must work together against fascism and racism, for climate justice and our continued existence as a species.

Extreme Weather

UK: Storm Deirdre ‘Chaos’ – 70mph winds, some parts of West Wales flooded. 2500 homes without power. A38 blocked by floodwater. Homes submerged under 10 feet of water. Cornwall ‘cut off’.

The deathtoll after the flooding and landslides in Italy has risen to 29 people. 14 million trees over thousands of hectares have been razed to the ground.

At least 59 confirmed dead, over 300 still missing and more than 250,000 evacuated amidst the deadliest wildfires in California’s history. 150ft flames, ‘firenados’ and smoke plumes visible from space. Trump has shamefully responded by attacking the state’s forest management and threatening to cut their federal funding. At time of writing, the fires are still only 35% contained.

In the US, there has also been ‘localised’ flooding in North Georgia and across Atlanta.

Flash flooding has struck the Persian Gulf, with heavy rain which burst through the roof of the King Khalid International Airport airport near Ryadh. Flash Flooding has killed at least another 12 people in Petra, Jordan, just 2 weeks after flooding which killed 21 people, mostly children. 4000 people have been evacuated. At least one person was killed in Kuwait on Saturday amidst floods which damaged roads, bridges and homes. Kuwaiti oil firms and ministries have announced a state of emergency.

Flash flooding has struck parts of Singapore and Kuala Lumpur.

At least two people have been killed by flash flooding in Thailand.

We mourn all the dead and our thoughts are with their friends and loved ones and all the climate refugees who have lost their homes. Climate breakdown and extreme weather disasters are real, happening right now and getting worse. An economic system that ignores this truth and treats our finite, living planet as having infinite resources to be exploited for unlimited profits is one based on a catastrophically dangerous lie.

We must change this. We can change this. We will change this.

The most radical thing any of us can do at this time is to be fully present to what is happening in the world

The Extinction Rebellion has officially begun

Wednesday 31st October saw over one thousand people come together for the Declaration of Rebellion. We stood in the face of all that we see wrong with our current system. The day was an uplifting gathering of hearts, minds and faiths. We amassed in Parliament Square beneath the statues of great practitioners of civil disobedience, Mahatma Gandhi, Nelson Mandela and Millicent Faucett. Powerful speeches that addressed our collective dismay at the state of environmental destruction, and willingness to rebel in these conditions, were heard from an array of speakers.

Mainstream political support was seen with MP and former Green Party leader Caroline Lucas, Green MEP Molly Scott Cato, and prominent Labour MP Clive Lewis speaking up for the Rebellion’s demands and against the continuing institutional failures to tackle climate breakdown. Campaigner Donnachadh McCarthy and journalist George Monbiot raised their voices in anger and grief at the devastation of the natural world within their lifetimes – Humanity having recently been shown to have wiped out 60% of animal populations since 1970. The response to these appalling consequences was made clear by the words of 15-year-old environmentalist Greta Thunberg,

To me almost everything is black and white.
There are no grey areas when it comes to survival

While tears were shed, with Extinction Rebellion wreaths laid on the ground to commemorate those who have already died because of environmental destruction, the overwhelming sense of the day was one of solidarity and purpose.

With everyone engaged in the need for civil disobedience, Dr Gail Bradbrook, a co-founder of Extinction Rebellion, then invited those in attendance to join her on the road outside Parliament. With a consensus among all those at the rally, the peaceful Declaration continued in the form of an occupation of the road for over two hours; made up of speeches, songs, and chants shaming the UK government’s inertia in the face of the climate emergency. Fifteen arrests took place in the process, including ex-serviceman Steve Masters and speaker Donnachadh McCarthy when they refused to break their peaceful protest outside Parliament.

The message was clear: WE’VE HAD ENOUGH. The resolve among the crowd was determined, and the events of a day for which no permission was sought, demonstrated the power we have in numbers. This was a strong marker from which we will continue to build. Another 15 Affinity Groups have been formed since Declaration Day, with talks and workshops continuing around the country. The numbers attending the upcoming actions are growing with each passing day, and we hope you join us between the 12th and 25th November for the Rebellion. The time is here. If not us, WHO? If not now, WHEN?

People from all backgrounds and walks of life standing side by side and declaring rebellion in unison was a powerful and inspiring thing to behold. This rebellion will be fuelled by respect and love and the fear that our civilisation is teetering on the edge of an abyss – Narj, Conscientious Protector

Rebellion Day 17th November 2018

This is going to be big.We are organising a day of mass public civil disobedience in London. We will have briefing stations where first time attendee rebels will be given necessary information for the day and some information on nonviolent discipline. These groups of attendees will then be taken to an affinity group who will have an assigned spot in London to block.

This means that we can rapidly integrate new people into the disruption and that we can spread all across town in a tactic known as swarming. The benefit of this is that the police cannot kettle (encircle and arrest) people that are dispersed and moving. We will maximise the levels of disruption.

Affinity group co-ordinators will be contacted with more information soon.

Organise travel from your area to be in London the night before and ready to be at Parliament square early on Saturday 17th November so that others in your area can get involved even if they haven’t had the Non Violent Direct Action training.

If you need accomodation please fill out this form.

Groups are encouraged to do actions in their own towns and cities if they cannot attend.

Time to shutdown London and focus on the issue of our time.

Please contact us via any one of our online outlets to join us on this journey

Join our social media amplification on Whatsapp to help get the word out!

Prepare for the Rebellion

With only a week to go until actions kick off in London, we have some key new information to share with affinity groups.

We have a new document containing the information you need to ‘Prepare for the Rebellion‘ – PLEASE SHARE THIS INFORMATION WITH YOUR AFFINITY GROUP MEMBERS

The key points are

1) To sign up for accommodation
2) To contact xr-nvda@protonmail.com if your affinity group coordinator has not received the action templates (or with any queries you have)
3) To let us know when you are coming for the actions
4) Contact your local media
5) Sign up for art materials

Appreciation piece

The growth of the Extinction Rebellion has only been possible because of the multifaceted years of work that have been done in the name of protecting the earth.

We are appreciative of every person who has made this rallying cry, and each week we will show our appreciation for campaigns and actions in the history of environmentalism that we are building on. Without these moments before us, it would not have been possible to have grown at the rate we have.

This week, we begin our narrative with this year’s Ende Gelände action from the 25th – 29th October 2018. A movement that in a matter of years has grown from 12 to 6,500 people. The level of organisation that categorised the action was a marker that we are now all working to achieve and surpass. With over 2,500 people successfully blocking the tracks that supply RWE’s power plant with lignite or brown coal, the action was an overwhelming success.

This was in spite of concerted efforts by the Polizei to sabotage the action by closing down the initial sight of the Ende Gelände camp and churning up the soil on Tuesday night to make any return impossible. Within two days, a back-up site was found, and the camp rapidly prepared for the thousands who were coming to attend training on Thursday and Friday before the action on Saturday. People from all over Europe eager to engage in non-violent direct action came to the camp. A train was organised from Prague, coaches came from Copenhagen, with others making their own way from France, Spain, the UK, Poland and many more.

The comprehensive training that prepared everyone to overcome the police presence and occupy the train tracks for over 24hrs was awe inspiring. Despite the Polizei diverting the legally approved route of the Ende Gelände march, the action was a storming success.

RWE is Germany’s second largest energy provider, owning Germany’s largest opencast coal mine, that has destroyed 90% of the historical Hambacher forest in the last 40 years. Shutting down the operation of such a powerful company, that was supported by a well prepared Polizei presence, spoke unequivocally of the power that we have when coming together, knowing what we want, and preparing to achieve it. We can achieve remarkable things together, click hereto see how it’s done.

There’s no use in longing for the past; today’s struggle is to find ways to progress meaningfully through our present, to use the time we have to act for the future. We need to gather the indifferent, call up the lost, lure in the apathetic whatever the cost. The time for complacency is over. The time to act is now.

Declaration of Rebellion this week – over 300 up for arrest in November
Welcome to the 6th Extinction Rebellion (XR) newsletter. If you’ve just joined, you can catch up on what we’ve been up to so far by visiting the newsletter archive, here.

We strongly recommend taking the time to familiarise yourself with our Basic BriefingHow to Get Involved and Campaign Overview documents.

With only a few days to go until the Declaration of Rebellion at Parliament Square on the 31st October, XR has been busy preparing. Rebels have been occupying Greenpeace UK’s HQ, blocking the road in Stroud and Bristol, developing the movement’s regenerative culture, supercharging the rebellion’s social media presence and much more.

Almost a hundred prominent academics, politicians and other influential individuals signed a letter in support of Extinction Rebellion. ‘Humans cannot continue to violate the fundamental laws of nature or science with impunity‘, say the signatories, a list of experts and influencers including former archbishop of Canterbury Rowan Williams, Professor Molly Scott Cato MEP from the Green Party and Dr Alison Green from Scientists Warning, as well as dozens of scientists. Another piece in the Guardian describes how Hundreds of us are ready to go to jail.

George Monbiot has endorsed XR and will be joining us to speak at Parliament Square for the Declaration of Rebellion. His article in the Guardian about the need for a people’s rebellion has been shared by U.S Senator, Bernie Sanders which has sent the rebellion international with groups starting in Los Angeles, Vancouver, D.C and Melbourne.

We have launched our declaration and demands.  Here are some of our gorgeous people speaking from the heart about this.

The video of the talk has had 7.5k hits and we have given over 65 talks across the UK, the rooms are packing out.
Our big ask is to get people to join us for Rebellion Day on Nov 17th.
Those that want to do more can get training on Nov 11th or on the Nov 12th and join an affinity group for the rebellion period.

There are groups for connection and support for Extinction Rebellion:
Young People,
Families with Young Children
and groups springing up across the UK.

Declaration of Rebellion

Wednesday, October 31, 2018. 10 AM – 3 PM
Meet at the statue of Millicent Fawcett, Parliament Square, London.

We are now only a few days away from officially commencing a rebellion to call attention to the oncoming climate catastrophe. We are demanding action be taken to stop what is being knowingly done to our world. We must take drastic action NOW.

So far, we’ve had over sixty talks in almost twenty cities across the UK. Over a dozen affinity groups have formed in this time, with actions taking place in multiple cities in preparation for the rebellion.

Three hundred people are interested in getting arrested, over two hundred of whom have said they are willing to risk going to prison.

On Declaration Day we will have a rally at Parliament Square. A number of high profile speakers have now confirmed they will attend and address those of us determined to rebel in the face of extinction. Speakers include; Green MEP, Molly Scott Cato and former Green Party co-leader, Caroline Lucas MP, Guardian journalist, George Monbiot and the inspiring and eloquent Greta Thunberg, who at the age of 15 was on school strike for weeks before, and every Friday since, the Swedish election to draw attention to climate change.

These speakers will be followed by a ceremony to signify the start of the Extinction Rebellion.
Extinction rebels are mobilising internationally. If you are interested in setting up an international group please get in contact with XR-International@protonmail.com.

We are concerned about the future, we are organising for it, and we will be heard.

Declaration day is just the start.

Introducing the Rebellion

Work with XR

We have a big ask. As many of you will have seen the rebellion has had a snowball effect over the last week through a George Monbiot article that wasshared by U.S Senator, Bernie Sanders.
Since then we’ve had 1,400 likes on our Facebook page and over 30,000 engagements (likes, shares etc) on our posts. This is 90% higher than last week. We’ve hit the snowballing moment!

We need folks who are willing to dedicate themselves to work on the rebellion and those who can give their time when possible to help with key jobs. A full description is in the application below.

We need help to make the rebellion a reality. A chance to play your role in a system change that is unprecedented for hundreds of years. A chance to help make history.

Greenpeace HQ Occupation

On Wednesday, 17th October the Extinction Rebellion occupied the UK headquarters of Greenpeace. It was undertaken to draw attention to the climate emergency, the severity of the problem, and the need for all concerned parties to drastically increase their efforts to tackle the crisis. The aim of the action was to persuade Greenpeace to inform their membership of the Extinction Rebellion movement, by notifying their mailing lists of the initial days of non-violent direct action on the 31st October and 17th November.

After entering the building, Extinction Rebels quickly set about distributing an open letter to all the staff, along with flowers and cakes. The rebels were conciliatory and not confrontational. Re-grouping in the entrance lobby, a pre-prepared talk was read out as senior Greenpeace representatives quickly agreed to hold a meeting with four Extinction Rebels.

While the meeting took place, rebels in the lobby finished the talk, sang, and held their own open meeting. After an hour and a half, the impromptu meeting was over. In the last few days we received a considerate response from Greenpeace of which we we will provide an official write up soon.

Our message was clear. Extinction Rebellion is looking to all of society, interested and unconcerned groups alike, to join us in addressing the climate emergency in comprehensive and honest terms. Action is urgently necessary to halt the terrible trend of apathy towards climate change.

Stroud and Bristol Roadblock
On 20th October, Extinction Rebels in Stroud carried out a Road Block and painted Extinction logos on the road in another run up action before the Declaration of Rebellion on the 31st October. With almost forty Rebels stopping the flow of traffic in the middle of Merrywalks in the centre of town, the action spoke for the ever growing Extinction Rebellion. People from all over the country are beginning to challenge political inertia in the face of ecological collapse.

While there was some frustration from drivers when confronted with the roadblock, Rebels held their position to keep focus on the pressing topic of climate change. The action was not designed to frustrate locals, it was directly addressing the most prescient issue of our times. The roadblock lasted 20 minutes, with Rebels engaging with drivers to explain the climate crisis and the need for such action to take place.

Police soon turned up to clear the Roadblock, with Rebels calmly leaving the road after making clear the aims of the Extinction Rebellion to onlookers and bystanding traffic. We can no longer continue to ignore what is happening to our climate in all good conscience. Now is the time stand up and take action. (Livestream)

Developing Regenerative Culture

We understand that what we are asking of you is not easy. The focus of this movement is the climate crises we are facing, and the lack of action by those in power to face up to these realities and address them properly. These ideas will crystallise around the non-violent direct action (NVDA) that is going to happen on October 31st and for two weeks between 12th and 25th November. We now have hundreds of supporters preparing to be arrested. These concepts concerning the climate crises and the ways we wish to tackle the issue can be difficult to take on board and act on. We fully appreciate this, and have a Regenerative Culture Working Group focusing specifically on how to support people in the lead up to, and through the NVDA in November.

We are asking all members of affinity groups to fill in this form and give it to their wellbeing coordinator BEFORE taking any action. Even if they are not expecting arrest, this will help wellbeing track anyone who is arrested and meet their needs:

Affinity Group Information form

Support & Resources for Taking Non Violent Direct Action & the Consequences
(Drop us some recommendations!)

In line with developing Regenerative Culture, we want to see each Affinity Group have an assigned Legal Observer. They play a vital role in any movement or campaign and it’s important we build our capacity right across our movement and networks. We have two training sessions coming up with Green and Black cross and these will provide invaluable information of how to behave at an action and deal with the police, for Legal Observers and anyone else attending actions.

Social Media Amplification

Want to support Extinction Rebellion on social media? Great! We need people to help amplify our posts: commenting, liking and sharing will help us reach more people. If you want to be part of the XR Social Media Amplification & Super-charging team, join this broadcast-only WhatsApp group. We won’t spam. We’ll use this sparingly. In order to climb the social media algorithms we need to get as many people as possible to interact with our posts as soon as they’re posted. This is how to expand the XR reach beyond our networks and make XR viral!  We may also use it to blast out news about any important actions, happenings or emergencies.

Ahead of 31st October we’re working hard to grow our social media channels organically. If you have Instagram and want to support digitally please follow @extinctionrebellion. We’re also looking to ramp up twitter and instagramfollowers and facebook likes too. Even if you no longer use these platforms and have otherwise abandoned your accounts, it will still help XR’s spread if you like+follow.

We are in the process of organising some technical social media training. If you’re interested, join the WhatsApp group and PM one of the admins.

Social Media Training
We are running a technical social media training on Nov 8th. Come along to learn how to make the most of your social channels during actions and campaigns.

The rebellion will be led by you!

Mission Lifeforce

Mission LifeForce is a growing international movement of legal Earth Protectors – people who care about protecting the Earth – who are signatories to a legal document, the Earth Protectors Trust Fund Document.Their mission is to protect the Earth by establishing ECOCIDE (ecosystem destruction) as a crime at the International Criminal Court in the Hague.

Their mission statement – To align the force of law with the force of life – is fully supported by the Extinction Rebellion. Like them, we too wish to see international law align with a universally recognised moral code of respect, peace and a duty of care for all life.

Identifying ecocide as a crime is not new – Sweden’s Prime Minister, Olaf Palme highlighted it at the time of the Stockholm Declaration in 1972 and it was further discussed in the decades preceding the drafting of the Rome Statute in the 1990s, though it did not make the final draft. Mission Lifeforce are working hard to see Ecocide become the fifth law in the Rome Statutes’ existing four Crimes Against Peace.

This work is of particular relevance to anyone involved in the Extinction Rebellion because signing up as a Conscientious Protector through Mission Lifeforce provides a straightforward way to present this case in court. For all those Rebels facing or planning on facing legal action as a result of acting from your conscience to prevent ecocide, signing up as a legal Earth Protector is highly recommended.

Please see the Mission Lifeforce website for more information

Our Declaration of Rebellion and the Demands

We have now launched our Declaration of the Extinction Rebellion and have published our Position and Demands:

  1. That the Government must tell the truth about how deadly our situation is, it must reverse all policies not in alignment with that position and must work alongside the media to communicate the urgency for change including what individuals, communities and businesses need to do.
  2. Good intentions and guidelines won’t save the ice caps. The Government must enact legally-binding policies to reduce carbon emissions in the UK to net zero by 2025 and take further action to remove the excess of atmospheric greenhouse gases. It must cooperate internationally so that the global economy runs on no more than half a planet’s worth of resources per year.
  3. By necessity these demands require initiatives and mobilisation of similar size and scope to those enacted in times of war. We do not however, trust our Government to make the bold, swift and long-term changes necessary to achieve this and we do not intend to hand further power to our politicians. Instead we demand a Citizens’ Assembly to oversee the changes, as we rise from the wreckage, creating a democracy fit for purpose.
Last time we told you about Greta Thunberg, who decided to go on school strike at the Swedish parliament to get politicians to act on the climate crisis. Now she is on her way in an electrical car to join us for the Declaration of the Extinction Rebellion in London on 31 October 2018!

Affinity Groups Take Action

One of the key principles of the Extinction Rebellion is Holocracy, empowering affinity groups to take the lead on Non-Violent Direct Action themselves. The aim of this movement is NOT to have a central group of figures dictating the terms of the rebellion. We want to see all rebels implement their own ideas of how best to raise awareness of the environmental crises through organised and creative disruption. We must all step forward and take the lead!

Monday 8th October saw non-violent direct action from XR Bristol halt traffic around the Bearpit roundabout in the city centre. Extinction Rebels drew attention to the need for legislation against the environmental crime of Ecocide. Two rebels sprayed the words “Make Ecocide Law” across the windows of the Magistrates Court, while others held flares staging a roadblock with banners which read, “Climate Emergency!”. Extinction Symbol decorated cupcakes were handed out to drivers and onlookers.

Police arrested three rebels (video report here): One of the roadblockers and the two spray chalkers.

The action made the front page of the Bristol Post on Tuesday morning. Robin Boardman, one of those arrested, has written an open letter in the Post about the action.

Tuesday 9th September Extinction Rebels joined Divest London to say NO to climate criminals outside The Dorchester Hotel. “Oil and Money 2018” was an evening organised by the fossil fuel industry that saw Bob Dudley, Group Chief Executive of BP, earn an award for his services to an industry that has precipitated the 6th mass extinction. Environmental campaigners marched to the entrance of the hotel to disrupt the shameless display of pomp and ceremony. Private security was used to forcibly move protestors from the entrance.

London Rebels attended the First Pedal on Parliament and Mass Die-in; The National Funeral for The Unknown Cyclist. This demo was organised by Stop Killing Cyclists and called on the government to invest #3Billion4Cycling infrastructure and to reverse tax cuts on toxic diesel and petrol. A symbolic horse drawn hearse led the cyclists from Lincoln’s Inn Field’s to parliament, where a 10 minute die-in was held.

The same day, other Extinction Rebels also joined the thousands who turned out for the London Antifascist Unity Demo

The Extinction Rebellion is an Anti-fascist Rebellion

Rebels from the Manchester affinity group attended the Global Frackdown Carnival in Sheffield, where Extinction Rebellion held a public talk followed by Non-Violent Direct Action training. Welcome XR Sheffield!

Declaration of Rebellion

Wednesday, October 31, 2018. 10 AM – 3 PM
Meet at the statue of Millicent Fawcett, Parliament Square, London.

We will rally at Parliament Square to make clear our defiance in the face of extinction and our determination to rebel. Speakers will discuss the dire situation we face. We will hold a short extinction ceremony, honouring those who have died and those who will. We will hold a peaceful sit-in and a banner drop at a nearby location. Some will take a non-violent action which may lead to arrest. If the government does not respond meaningfully to the Extinction Rebellion’s demands, decentralised mass civil disobedience action will commence from the 12th of November.

Now is the time because we are out of time.

There is nothing left to lose.

For a full list of the 19 events coming in the next week from Plymouth to Manchester check out our website- https://risingup.org.uk/XR/rebel.php

Key Demands of The Rebellion: Zero CO2

In last week’s newsletter, we covered our demand for Sortition – the use of random selection to fill a legislative assembly with members of the public who are trained and appointed to decide on policy. This week, we look at our demand that the UK Government enact legally-binding policy measures to reduce carbon emissions in the UK to zero by 2025.

In 1988, NASA scientist Dr. James Hansen testified before a Congressional committee that significant global warming was happening due to increasing levels of man made Carbon Dioxide (CO2) in the earth’s atmosphere[1]. The New York Times’ front page discussed this revealing testimony in no uncertain terms, “If Dr. Hansen and other scientists are correct, then humans, by burning of fossil fuels and other activities, have altered the global climate in a manner that will affect life on earth for centuries to come.”[2] – This is now unequivocal[3].

Since then, we have continued emitting CO2 at an exponential rate, with emissions increasing 62.1% since 1992[4]. As the recent IPCC report has made categorically clear, global warming beyond the threshold of 1.5C above pre-industrial levels, will have catastrophic effects on the world. It also lists “rising atmospheric CO2 levels”, first in its “Drivers of Impacts” on global warming[5].

At their going rate, the levels of CO2 in the earth’s atmosphere are projected to match that of the last mass extinction on earth within one hundred years, “It took roughly a million years for CO2 to change by one hundred parts per million. It is now changing about 25,000 times faster than in known geologic history.”[6]

Ongoing trends in global CO2 emissions are the biggest impediment to ensuring the safety of the natural world [8]. The science is clear. If we want to leave a habitable world for future generations, limiting emissions will not suffice. We must act now, and we must act decisively.

Our demand for zero carbon is technologically and economically possibly, we just need to create the political will!

The most damning indictment of climate change by the IPCC to date, while still conservative in it’s estimates, has already proven to be a provocative, newsworthy story.

High Court Rejects Injunction Against Fracking at Preston New Road

Expressions of grief and rage from water protectors worldwide on Friday, as the High Court rejected an emergency injunction to stop Cuadrilla fracking at Preston New Rd. Mr Justice Supperstone also refused permission for a judicial review of Lancashire County Council’s emergency planning procedures. The only positive news to come out of the case is the revelation that each day’s work stoppage has cost Cuadrilla a reported £94k. Fracking was expected to begin on Saturday but was ironically prevented by the extreme weather conditions of storm Callum. Cuadrilla claim fracking began on Monday, despite an epic 12 hour lock on at the gates

It has been discovered that Judge Altham who sentenced the #frackfreethree to jail time, has family interests in the fracking industry. Blackpool South MP, Gordon Marsden, has tabled Parliamentary Questions about this apparent breach of the judicial code and the Justice Secretary has been urged to open an investigation. The #frackfreethree’s appeal will be heard this Wednesday, 17th. The community is rallying for a mass demo on Saturday 20th October.

Judge Acquits Climate Activists Who Shut Down Tar Sands Pipelines

Just before the 2016 US election, on October 11, 2016, activists in North Dakota, Washington, Montana and Minnesota turned the valves on four pipelines, temporarily halting the flow of oil from Canada to the US by nearly 70%. Their acquittal this week stands in stark contrast with the recent sentencing of the #frackfreethree who received lengthy jail sentences for the much lesser crime of lorrysurfing on this side of the pond.

Hambach: Greenpeace Activists Scale German Embassyfor Banner Drop

The banner, which was dropped from the embassy on Monday read: “Exit Coal – Protect Hambach Forest”, following a court order which suspended the clearance of the forest, pending the verdict on a lawsuit brought by environmental group, BUND. The German courts also overruled a police ban on anti-coal protest near the site.

Ecosia Offers to Buy Hambach Forest for €1 million!

Ecosia chief executive Christian Kroll has written to RWE chief Martin Schmitz, saying: “We think that such a fair balance of interests between RWE and the population can be found, and are committed to the purchase of the land”. RWE declined to comment.

Dutch Appeals Court Upholds Emissions Ruling

The original ruling came in June 2015 following a case brought by environmental group, Urgenda who were representing 900 Dutch citizens. The Dutch Government appealed but the court’s landmark ruling on Tuesday says that they are under a legal obligation to protect citizens from climate change and must reduce CO2 emissions 25% by 2020. Similar cases are underway in countries around the world.

Politicians Still Ignoring IPCC for Short Term Profits

Jair Bolsonaro, the right wing candidate in the Brazilian Presidential election this week won the first round of the race. His commitments include pulling Brazil out of the Paris Climate accords, closing Brazil’s environment agency (IBAMA), and supporting Agribusinesses that cleared 545km² of the Brazilian Amazon in August 2018 – a tripling of the figures for August 2017

Australian Prime Minister Scott Morrison has rejected IPCC recommendations to phase out coal power by 2050, stating that Australia can meet targets of cutting CO2 emissions by 26-28% by 2030 “at a canter”. This lack of political will is particularly shortsighted in the case of Australia where any survival of the Great Barrier Reef is dependant on holding global warming to 1.5C rather than 2C.
