“Hitler denial” as a parallel to climate denial

By Zeeshan Hasan

I recently came across the online comic Hitler Denial by Australian artist Stuart McMillan. Two panels are shown below as a taster.

The whole comic is definitely worth reading, please visit Stuart’s site to see it! I would discuss it further, but don’t want to give away the whole thing. What I would mention is that I’m cautious about glorifying war time leaders like Winston Churchill; although he was indeed successful in fighting Nazi Germany, it was at the cost of presiding over a terrible famine in India which killed millions.

Nonetheless, I think the parallel with the second world war and the ‘war footing’ that the entire world economy needs to be put on to in order to fight climate change is a worthwhile one to make.

Almost Midnight

Confused by the rhythm
And still, he stands up to dance
With Godheads and their hi-tech threats
Orange bleeds into red

He doesn’t wear a watch
Instead, he stares straight at the sun
Like a rabbit in the headlights
Beyond the point of no return

Confused by the rhythm
She sits down and puts the world to rights
A frightening place with nowhere to hide
The clock strikes closer to midnight

Tired, she’s so tired of waiting
For the sirens to start singing
Wound up like a spring with rage in her eyes
She crosses her heart and hopes to die

These are the days it never rains but it pours
You can run, but you can’t hide forever
The weather will have its way with you!

Excerpt from the poem “One True Tribe

This is the time and the need for the One True Tribe to recognize itself and begin living.
Who is in this One True Tribe?
All Hearts everywhere
We cannot, not know each other.
There are no places we haven’t seen
And no one can live apart from the other, from how the other somewhere else affects everyone here.
We know of everyone’s suffering and everyone’s needs.
Our hearts are all the same, with the same impulse – to live and live well.

To live well all must know their own heart and recognize everyone’s heart.
The heart – the place and the knowing of love – the recognition of all as love.
Love is the impulse to serve without selfishness, to give so all can live with dignity.

Love makes happiness, purpose and enjoyment,
love does not cause suffering for others.
This is the time and the world has the need, for all of us to see itself as
One family, as the One True Tribe.

The Rebellion Needs YOU!

We want to post your creative outpourings across our social media channels. Please support us in the run up to the Declaration on the 31st and after by sending us your artwork, photos, decorated XR rebellion cakes, songs, music, films, knitting, cartoons, and memes.

Whatever you are planning: a cheeky local action: like putting an XR sticker on the Churchill statue’s hat or dangling a banner from a bridge or sewing an XR logo onto your kid’s bib – please take a short recording or a still photo and send them to us.

This rebellion is fuelled by your creativity and we want to keep that energy rising.

Send your material to us and the social media team will keep telling the story of our rebellion by posting your art in amongst news stories.

Dear artists,

We are planning a rebellion against the government this autumn.
We are looking for support.

We are in an Ecological crisis, which includes mass species extinction.
Our course is set to societal collapse, the killing of millions and possibly billions of people, human extinction is possible, the future is bleak and our children are not safe.

Change to avert the worst of the disaster is still technically and economically possible. It involves creating a world, which is less frenetic and more beautiful; making the necessary changes will also create jobs. This is an emergency situation – action is urgent.

Our Government isn’t acting in accordance with what science and history tells us (e.g. the rise of fascism). Therefore our Government is criminally negligent. We have a moral duty to rebel, whatever our politics. Social science shows us that peaceful civil disobedience is an effective way to bring about change. Our lives have meaning when we follow our conscience and are willing to make sacrifices to protect what we love. We ask others who feel the same way to join our peaceful Rebellion.

We have three demands:

  • That the Government must tell the truth about how deadly our situation is, it must reverse all policies not in alignment with that position and must work alongside the media to communicate the urgency for change including what individuals and communities need to do.
  • The Government must enact legally-binding policy measures to reduce carbon emissions in the UK to zero by 2025 and take further action to remove the excess of atmosphere. It must cooperate internationally so that the global economy runs on no more than half a planets worth of resources.
  • By necessity these demands mean an initiative similar to those enacted at times of war. We do not however, hand further power to our Government, we demand a Citizens Assembly to oversee the changes, as we rise from the wreckage, creating a democracy fit for purpose

Please do watch this video if you have time, one of our members explains more;

There have been talks like this happening up and down the country all summer and people are preparing to repeatedly break the law, with many citizens willing to serve prison sentences.

Obviously we run on passion and our hearts drive what we do but there is always a need for money so if you have lots of it please give us some! Other ways to support us could include making work in response or solidarity, some post-prison fundraising or supporting statements, or even to get involved in creative actions? I’ll leave that with you but please think how you might be able to help us out as we sacrifice ourselves in service to future generations.

There will be a declaration of rebellion on the 31st October at Parliament square at 10am. Then a range of nonviolent direct actions through to the 17th November, when we will meet at Parliament square again. This is a first iteration and further disobedience with international solidarity is planned for spring 2019.

Please get in touch if you would like to know more or if you can help.

We are moving through grief to action,
